Women in Racing
WOMEN IN RACING

Women in Racing is an initiative independent of the BHA, Racing for Change or any body in Racing.


Established in September 2009, the vision is to reach women across the industry to raise the profile of women, and with that visibility encourage more women to be appointed into senior roles. With such role models, it is hoped that more women will come into Racing and enrich the sport accordingly.

Our Mission Statement defines this as follows:

"Women in Racing is created to develop the profile of women in the sport: To encourage senior appointments at Board level across the industry and to attract more women into Racing, to strengthen connections and collaborate on approaches to help promote the health of the sport and to enhance its reputation as an attractive sector in which to build a career."

To support this Mission Statement, we have agreed the following 10 objectives and their related activities:

1. Provide women in racing with mentoring and development opportunities:
  • Possible activities: Provide educational support, PR articles to showcase successes; network of contacts
2. Create a framework where new opportunities can be discussed and nurtured:
  • Possible activities: Develop cross industry working group with regular meetings to discuss opportunities and issues; continue regular networking events to meet objectives and provide an enjoyable sociable event.
3. Combine knowledge and best practice:
  • Possible activities: Speakers, including from other women’s networks, provide a database of information concerning rights; figure as confidential support and provide assistance as needed if they have an issue/barrier to career progression. Create relationships with other relevant women’s networks, link into BHA training.
4. Foster links with like-minded individuals:
  • Possible activities: Networking and charitable events, fund-raising for the charity selected by WiR whose objectives are aligned with those of WiR.
5. Create a culture that promotes Women in Racing and encourages appointment of senior women at the highest levels in Racing:
  • Possible activities: PR campaign, work with bodies and headhunters to get more women onto key Racing Boards.
6. Raise comfort level for women in traditionally male-dominated venues and working environments:
  • Possible activities: Work with REL and its constituent parts to ensure female assistant trainers/stable staff/jockeys and administrators get same respect and career progression opportunities as male contemporaries.
7. Develop commercial opportunities for suitable brands to become more involved in Racing:
  • Possible activities: PR campaign to attract female related brands—be it fashion, financial services, lifestyle, health etc.; work to create a bespoke horseracing sponsorship/partnership for female brands that could benefit Racing overall such as race sponsorship (for fillies/mares), partners for Ladies Days; learn from other women’s sporting networks such as football, cricket.
8. Involve women in the Racing for Change Committees, selecting the best qualified for the roles with a longer term view of appointments to the leadership positions.
  • Possible activities: Link up with Racing for Change and Harrison Fraser to ensure women candidates are considered.
9. Gain visibility in policy and politics circles.
  • Possible activities: Raise profile with APRG, find and forge relationship with existing and new women MPs who are interested in Racing. Racing Manifesto to include Women in Racing as a resource. Post-election, get familiar with key Ministers/Advisers.
10. Promote WiR as a resource to tap into for local business circles, local PR opportunities.
  • Possible activities: Work with local Business Alliance to promote visibility of high achieving women in racing, showcase successful women in racing.
