Medication Control
One important aspect to ensuring that Racing is fair and safe is that horses receive the treatments they need, but do not race whilst under treatment. Any attempt to affect the outcome of a race by misuse of drugs must also be prevented.
A modern regulatory regime to ensure this happens encompasses education for prevention; targeted risk based testing, a deterrent and surveillance programme, and use of best available analytical technology.
Based on a combination of factors, including intelligence, we test horses mainly after racing, and increasingly before racing and during training.
There are also strict rules on what can be bought into racecourse stables and what can be given to a horse on racedays.
If drugs or positive tests are found they result in fines and/or disqualification.
However, British racing is a clean sport; most of the drug positives are the result of inadvertent carry-over of veterinary treatments. We have an active programme of education, prevention and research to reduce the incidence of these positives.
