The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup is one of the best-known races in the jump racing calendar and is the highlight of the winter season at Newbury.
Since its inception in 1957, the 3m21/2f race has been the first major staying chase of the season and often provides a pointer to the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Grand National later in the season. The most famous winner was the mighty Arkle (1964 & ’65) and more recently the high-class greys One Man (1994), Suny Bay (1997) and Teeton Mill (1998) have enjoyed success over the testing Newbury fences.
The Hennessy is not the only attraction on Saturday’s card, which also features some of the best staying hurdlers in the Grade 2 Long-Distance Hurdle (3m1/2f) and young talent in the Listed Gerry Feilden Hurdle (2m1/2f).
The meeting, renowned for its atmosphere and excitement, has been revamped in 2003 and will be held on Saturday and Sunday, rather than the usual Friday and Saturday. Sunday’s racecard is headed by the Systems By Design Novices’ Chase, a Grade 2 race over three miles which attracts some of the best up-and-coming staying chasers.
