INDUSTRY RECRUITMENT & TRAINING
Welcome to the Industry Recruitment and Training team blog. Here we will bring you an insight into all the work that goes on behind the scenes to recruit, train and retain the workforce that is the powerhouse behind the sport.

17th May 2010- There’s more to it than you may think? Than meets the eye?
We’re a small team that often pass like ships in the night as we are often out and about working with different people and organisations both within racing and externally.

When I talk to people about the role and remit of the team they are often surprised to find out how broad it is. In a nutshell we look to promote racing as a place of work and a career opportunity, work to ensure that our training and education meets the needs of the industry and continues to raise our standards as a sport.

As a result we also get involved in community and welfare related projects that helps support the development and retention of staff in the industry.

To give you a flavour of the diversity of our work, some of our key priorities for 2010 are:

  • Relaunching the careersinracing website in line with our updated recruitment strategy. The competition in recruiting young people is intense, and they are vital pipeline both as potential racegoers and employees. The updated website will include new sections aimed at targeting teachers, careers advisers and parents in order support them in providing careers information and guidance to young people. We are also focusing on creating better and more productive relationship with schools.
  • Having conducted the first ever audit of community activities in the industry under the banner of Racing Together, the team is tasked with identifying and developing key community initiatives and partnerships.
  • Reviewing and developing jockey education to continue to raise standards and put our professional sports person education on a par with other sports.
  • Relaunching and integrating the Training Race series to support the development of the jockeys’ education.
  • Introducing a jockey coach qualification linked to the UKCC qualification.
  • Recruiting and training 20 high calibre graduates to take up work placements around the industry. This graduate programme has run over the past 20 years and it has provided a number of senior racing executives including the two youngest racecourse managers.
  • Developing and promoting more continued training for stable staff
  • Developing industry guidance on safeguarding and working with young people and vulnerable adults
Further to this, one of the key projects I’ll be updating you on in my next blog is Racing Excellence, an industry accreditation for jockeys’ training races, supported by qualified jockey coaches.

It was launched on Saturday 15th May at Newmarket Races and is the first step towards creating more structured coaching and support for jockeys. If you need to know more information now then take a look at the website – www.careersinracing.com/racingexcellence.

My aim for the blog is to update you on key work such as this, and also discuss any important issues that might be around.

More information about the team and the various activities are available on the careersinracing website.
